We are currently open to submissions for our second seasonal anthology, Summer Spells. We are looking for stories and poems that reflect our anthology’s title, ones that utilise both concepts of ‘summer’ and ‘spells’, but how you interpret them is up to you.
What we are interested in is what inspires you when you think of the title. Does it conjure thoughts of long walks on the beach, holiday romances, the summer solstice, memories of childhood holidays, stone circles or pagan rituals? What about life on a planet where there no longer is a summer season or perhaps a summer that is out of control? What about a yearning for winter / autumn / spring?
As you can see, we do not have a narrow focus for this anthology. We want to see what “Summer Spells” mean to you…Some things you might wish to consider:
- The “Summer” of the title, obviously means that the season will play a large part in your submission(s), possibly in the form of a summer setting or simply as inspiration. It could be set in another season, if the driving force behind the piece is a longing / hatred of summer or something that happened in summer.
- Now, what about the “Spells” part? Think enchantment, fairies, falling in love, a period or length of time, witches, wishes, hopes, dreams, change, transformation, magic….Think, the sun, gods / goddesses / magical beings associated with the summer or the sun, the natural world at the height of the growing season, the season of life and vibrancy…
- Fairytale, folklore, historical, mythological, alternate history, magical realism, fantastical or futuristic, romantic or scary, thriller or mystery, inspired by the paranormal or by nature itself…as long as it fits our theme, we want to read it.
There are so many ways you can run with this theme.
If you want to learn more about this anthology, check out our submission guidelines. And don’t forget, submissions close 21 May 2017
We can’t wait to read what you’ve come up with!
